Millions of U.S. homes use propane for space heat, water heat, or cooking — often with a large yard tank filled by a bulk delivery truck, not a grill-cylinder cage. This page keeps those paths straight and points you to official price data.

Bulk delivery vs public fill stations

Home heating customers usually contract with a local propane marketer who delivers to a 120–1,000+ gallon ASME tank. AFDC’s public LPG station list is aimed at fueling locations (including vehicle and cylinder fills), not every residential delivery route. Use our station map when you need a public fill; call your marketer for scheduled home delivery.

What EIA residential prices measure

Each heating season, EIA surveys residential propane prices (dollars per gallon, excluding taxes) for the U.S., some PADDs, and selected states. Charts and latest values on this site: /propane-prices/. Official sources:

Those figures are for residential deliveries — not the same as a 20 lb grill exchange price.

Sizing a top-off estimate

For large tanks, gallons ≈ tank capacity × fill fraction (often ~80% of water capacity for safety headspace). Try 250 or 500 gal in the calculator and pick your state if EIA covers it.

Safety

Keep clearances around the tank as required by local code and your supplier. If you smell gas, evacuate and call for help from a safe place. Education: NFPA.
